First Time Configuration of Mobile Unit

This document outlines the most common configuration of mobile units for use with TreeWorks. However there are several possible configurations so if at any time during these instructions you have question give us a call and we can walk you through the setup. TreeWorks Support: 978-249-6495

I. Create an ActiveSync Partnership with your PC and PDA.

a. Connect the handheld to your PC via a USB connection The Active Sync Synchronization Setup Wizard will start automatically when the new handheld is connected.

b. Take the wizard defaults until you get to Synchronization Options as seen in the image below. Files must be checked as shown in the image below.

 

c. Click OK to create a Synchronization folder.

 

d. Click finish to complete the partnership

Once the mobile partnership has been established with the Desktop, the next step is to configure TreeWorks Desktop application to point to the newly created Active Sync Folder.

Your partnership name is shown in the Active Sync Window. The partnership name is “your-pda”.

Write down your partnership name for later use.

 

II. Configure TreeWorks Mobile Unit

a. Open ArcMap and click on Configuration button on the TreeWorks toolbar.

b. Click "Mobile Units" in configuration list

c. Now click "Add New Mobile Device" shown in the image below

d. Enter the name of the handheld unit.

This will be the name you will use to identify the handheld. (ie. PDA_1, John_pda, field1,)

 i. Physically label the PDA with the unit name. This will avoid confusion when multiple handhelds are in use.

 

e. Navigate to the Active Sync Folder

i. Click on the "Browse" link

ii. Navigate to My Documents

iii. Click on your-pda My Docuemts folder

iv. Click OK

f. Once the Mobile Unit Name and Synchronization path are set click the “Save” button to save. Then Close the Configuration form.

III. Configure ArcPad Applet Paths

 Use the TreeWorks toolbar to check data out

1. Click the check out button on the TreeWorks Toolbar

 

2. Select your pda unit that you identified in the last section. Click OK

 

3. Once the checkout is complete, allow a few moments for Active Sync to transfer the files from the Synchronization Folder to your mobile device.

You will know that files are finished transferring to your mobile device when the Active Sync Window looks like the following graphic showing a Status of Synchronized. Usually takes about 30 seconds…

 

4. Un-Dock the handheld unit from the Desktop PC.

5. Open up ArcPad on the Mobile Device.

6. Tap on the options button located on the ArcPad 7 Toolbar OR tap  in ArcPad 8

7. Click on “Paths” tab

8. Make your ArcPad Paths tab look exactly like the following graphic.

9. Tap OK to exit the ArcPad Configuration.

10. Tap Exit under the file menu to completely close ArcPad.

11. Now Re-Open ArcPad

i. Open an Existing document

ii. Navigate to /My Documents/treeworks/ArcPad.apm

You should now see TreeWorks toolbar in ArcPad.
